Ця прикраса була головним атрибутом вільних людей – козаків. 

Сережка/кульчик в лівому вусі у козака означала, що він один син у матері, у правому – останній чоловік у роду. Якщо ж козак носив по сережці/кульчику й у правому, й у лівому вусі, це означало, що він – одна дитина в батьків. У походах і боях таких козаків, по можливості, берегли. Вони билися пліч-о-пліч із побратимами й несли всі тяготи військового життя, але при цьому товариші намагалися захистити їх від смерті в бою, не посилали на ризиковані завдання.

Срібна сережка мала й суто практичне застосування. Так, коли під час походу козаки набирали воду з незнайомої водойми, то на кілька хвилин занурювали в неї сережку. Срібло знезаражувало воду й допомагало боротися з вірусами, зокрема з гепатитом.

he was the only son of his mother, in the right one - the l
ast man in the family. If a Cossack wore an earring 
in both the right and left ear, it meant that he was the 
only child of his parents. In campaigns and battles, such 
Cossacks were protected whenever possible. They fought 
side by side with their comrades and bore all the 
burdens of military life, but at the same time their 
comrades tried to protect them from death in battle, did 
not send them on risky tasks.

The silver earring also had a purely practical application. 
So, when the Cossacks drew water from an unfamiliar 
reservoir during the campaign, they dipped an earring 
into it for a few minutes. Silver disinfected water and 
helped fight viruses, including hepatitis.
