In the past, eggs were thought to hold special powers that could positively impact people's everyday lives.
Pysanky (ornately decorated eggs) were given as symbols of good fortune and well wishes.
In pre-Christian times, pysanky were created to ensure the return of spring, to protect people from evil or catastrophe, and to bring fertility to livestock and crops.
Eggs represent new life and rebirth and it is thought that this ancient custom became a part of Christian Easter celebrations in the medieval period.
Because eating eggs was forbidden during Lent (the 40 days before Easter), it was considered a treat to have eggs on Easter Sunday.
Although pysanky are often thought of as Ukrainian Easter eggs, the art of pysanky can be found in Poland, Belarus, Hungry and many other European countries.
